About the event

Sharsheret’s The Impact of Culturally Competent Cancer Care explores the importance of culturally competent care for cancer patients. Not simply the politically correct thing to do, or something kind during a difficult time, this type of care has a proven impact on medical outcomes. The training explores the issues through the example of Jewish women facing breast cancer and includes topics such as the diversity of the Jewish community, increased hereditary risk for Jewish women, and cultural, religious and spiritual issues that may impact detection, treatment or survivorship. Woven throughout the presentation will be examples of how this information is relevant to many other communities. Participants will also learn about the free resources Sharsheret can provide to all breast and ovarian cancer patients.

This specific training, planned in collaboration with AJMA, will also address how patient care might feel different between Jewish healthcare professionals and Jewish patients as medical professionals strive to offer the same level of care.

  • Participants will understand the psychosocial and physical impact of culturally competent care for women facing cancer.
  • Participants will identify resources for their work with women facing breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
  • Participants will understand how culture and religion may impact diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship of cancer.

Those who participate in the live session will receive one free CE or NCPD credit through ACCME (MD/PA/Advanced Practice Nurses), ANCC (all other nurses) and ASWB (social workers).
